What You Can Do About Hearing Loss?

An estimated 10% of all Canadians have hearing loss. If you think you or a loved one is among them, there is help. That help is available close to home by Elgin Audiology Consultants, the Blenheim Hearing Clinic and the Lambeth Hearing Clinic.  No more need to travel to see an Audiologist about your hearing loss.  Elgin Audiology has offices in St.Thomas, Aylmer and now West Lorne.  With the office in West Lorne, right behind the West Elgin Community Health Centre, Elgin Audiology now truly covers all of Elgin County.  The Blenheim Hearing Clinic is located in the McLauchlin Wellness Centre, while the Lambeth Hearing Clinic is located within Rejuvenate Health Services in South London.  All the clinics provide full diagnostic hearing tests, hearing aid prescription, repairs and dispensing as well as other procedures such as Central Auditory Processing evaluations.

You or a loved one may have a hearing loss if you:

  • Frequently ask people to repeat themselves
  • Often turn your ear toward a sound to hear it better
  • Find that people sound as if they mumble
  • Lose your place in group conversations
  • Keep the volume on your  TV at a level that others say is too loud
  • Have pain or ringing in your ears
  • Notice that women’s and children’s voices are harder to understand.

“People who see themselves in these statements should see a registered audiologist for a hearing test,” according to Audiologist, David Pfingstgraef.  Audiologists specialize in preventing, identifying, assessing, and treating hearing disorders.  They provide treatment for hearing loss including properly-fitting hearing aids and other assistive listening devices, and they can teach people various listening strategies.

“Even a very slight hearing loss can have an impact on your daily life. Hearing loss is treatable, and there is no reason for anyone to miss all the important sounds of life.” Hearing loss often occurs slowly and has many causes, such normal aging, diabetes or exposure to noise.

Audiologists recommend that children have their hearing checked if there are any concerns at any time, but for sure before entry into school.  An annual hearing checkup is a good idea for adults from age 45 and older.

For folks that have a hearing loss, many options are available to help.  Some of these include hearing aids.  According to Pfingstgraef, the new digital hearing aids fit comfortably, are easy to use and actually now allow you to hear much better even in noisier rooms.
